What Etsy’s new AI guidelines mean for sellers

Etsy’s 22 October 2026 update puts creativity, craftsmanship and buyer trust at the centre of AI use. AI can support your business, but buyers must understand your role in creating an item and see an accurate representation of what they will receive. This guide was reviewed against Etsy’s official guidance on 23 October 2026.

For most products, a listing must include at least one unedited photograph of the actual item against a real background. That required photo must not be changed in any way, including cropping, retouching or AI editing. Etsy recommends making your first listing photo the clearest, most realistic representation of the item; that first-photo recommendation is distinct from the mandatory unedited-photo requirement.

AI imagery for Etsy: enhance the presentation, not the product

Beyond the required unedited photo, Etsy permits editing other listing images, including with AI, as long as the result accurately represents the product. Allowed examples include correcting lighting or colour balance to match real life, cropping and resizing, and replacing a background without changing the item itself.

Never use AI to change a physical product’s actual colour, texture, condition, core design or features. Do not remove cracks, hide damage or invent details, accessories or a finish that the buyer will not receive. A convincing generated image is still unsuitable if it misrepresents the item. Real photographs remain the reference for every review.

RunCommerce’s imagery tools can generate creative from a product photo or description. For Etsy physical-product listings, start with a real product photo and a tightly scoped brief, then compare every output with the original item. Use only outputs that pass your accuracy review as supplementary imagery. Generated creative cannot replace the required unedited photo, and this workflow is not an automatic compliance check.

Product content grounded in what you actually sell

RunCommerce’s Content Tool grades and rewrites product listings, while its SEO and translation tools support related catalogue work. Use verified product facts to prepare titles and descriptions: materials, dimensions, variants, what is included and your genuine creative or production role. Review each suggestion before using it in an Etsy listing.

Keep claims specific and supportable. Do not let AI invent provenance, certifications, handmade status, performance claims or delivery promises. Clear copy should explain the actual item and your contribution to it, not disguise AI-generated work as entirely handmade. Search-friendly wording can help describe a product; it does not guarantee Etsy search placement or sales.

    A human-reviewed workflow for Etsy-ready content

    1. Gather the evidence. Keep the original, unedited product photograph separate from creative drafts, and assemble accurate product information and any rights or production-partner details. Choose the Etsy product category and check its specific image requirements before preparing a listing.

    2. Scope the AI work. Use RunCommerce to prepare product copy or supplementary imagery from your source material. Brief the tool to preserve the product’s real features, condition and scale. Treat the result as a proposal, not an approved listing.

    3. Review against the actual item. Check imagery side by side with your real photographs. Verify every factual claim, remove unsupported wording and reject misleading outputs. Include the required real photo or the appropriate category-specific evidence.

    4. Be transparent and publish with care. Add the disclosures relevant to your product and imagery, then review the complete listing in Etsy before publishing. RunCommerce’s published tools support content preparation and human review; this page does not promise a direct Etsy connection, automated Etsy publishing or approval by Etsy.

AI disclosures: what is required and what Etsy recommends

If the item itself is created using AI, Etsy says sellers must disclose that use and must not misrepresent AI-generated work as handmade or entirely their own creation. Etsy continues to allow AI-generated art where the seller plays a clear creative role and is transparent about the process.

For AI-edited listing photos, Etsy’s announcement recommends noting the edits in the listing description as a transparency best practice. That recommendation is separate from the disclosure requirement for AI-created items. A disclosure does not make an inaccurate image acceptable.

An example for an edited background, only if true: ‘Additional listing images use AI-assisted background editing. The unedited photograph shows the actual item you will receive.’ Adapt any wording to your real process; do not claim the product was untouched unless you have checked that it was.

    Different products need different evidence

Print-on-demand: where a production partner prints your original design on a standard base product, Etsy permits a stock-photo mockup if its owner has authorised its use. This is not a blanket permission to use any generated mockup.

Digital downloads: non-visual items such as audio files may use representative imagery, including AI-generated imagery, if it does not mislead buyers. Other digital downloads should include a visual preview or excerpt of the actual content buyers receive.

Customised and made-to-order items you make yourself: show real, finished examples of your previous work so buyers can assess its quality. Patterns, recipes, seeds and similar products need at least one real, unedited photo of a result made using the product, rather than relying only on AI-generated or simulated results.

Etsy’s update prohibits AI-generated functional guides such as patterns, recipes and instructions: the information buyers rely on to create or use the item must be your own work. Bot-generated listings without human involvement are also prohibited. RunCommerce should support your merchandising work, not replace your authorship or judgement.

Designed around the guidelines, not a compliance guarantee

RunCommerce helps you prepare and review content with these requirements in mind. No AI tool can guarantee Etsy compliance, listing approval or a particular commercial result. Sellers remain responsible for accuracy, image rights, disclosures, Etsy’s Creativity Standards and applicable law. RunCommerce is not endorsed or certified by Etsy.

Etsy may remove misleading listings and take action against shops. If an item is materially different from the listing and a buyer opens a case, the seller may be responsible for a refund. Check Etsy’s current policies before publishing or updating listings, as requirements and enforcement may change. Talk to our team about a review-led content workflow for your products.
